Earlier this year I asked Seamus on Twitter about the picture with the wooden shack in the woods and the T-Rex shack image. He said those were created for the marketing team. I believe the images like these are also part of things made for the marketing team to market the game, and never anything they actually planned to have in the game. He said the marketing team demanded the images and he always thought they were a waste of time.
If we have images of something that looks like a rendering image, or like these above, it is pretty possible they were made only for marketing.
this looks a lot like the starting area in ascent 1 from beta 96/7 build but even if that's where they took this picture, they must have made a separate version of this level, with high res textures and models
This is an early images from 1997 I believe. It is just a show-off image and is not part of an actually level (you can see the borders clearly on it).
Glitch asked Seamus last week I believe about the coding history, and they did have some sort of tech engine back in 1997, so images that doesn't look like they were rendered in 3ds Max was probably viewed in that.
But this is probably just a typical marketing image. It is still nice though, as the resolution on the image itself is really high.
Actually, tatu, this location is featured in the first trailer (the one that was in MPEG format originally):
It's the one in the second sequence. And there are several other shots from the same area. Maybe some mini-level like the ones we've already identified.
Do we have the model for the log cabin there or is that the cabin from the lab in that video?
I also want to point out I do not remember the name of the program but there was a 3d drafting program then that said it could draw outdoors and interiors. I just do not remember the name of it and it might be where a few pics came from including the terrain pic we have for the plains that no one knows what program it belong to.
We do not have a model of that cabin. We've been told that the cabin image was made only for marketing, so possibly it was never planned to be part of the game (which could also be seen with the "perfect" texture placement on models).
I do not believe the devs used such a program. We know they had a clay model of the island which they probably scanned. And we know the terrain was heavily modified anyway as there is an early heightmap of Pine Valley in the source. And Hammond's map in the town IIRC have an greyscale image of the island, and that is where the Plains terrain in Isla Sorna comes from.
