Random Jurassic Park Modelling WIP thread

Post by hppav »

Instead of bouncing from back to forth with level construction and modelling, I decided I'd just model as much JP stuff as possible. Here's the WIP on my most recent version of the Operations Building from the Lost World:

Holy frak dude. :o My God. I thought for sure I would be the first to model this baby in detail... and I can't finish mine until JPDS1 is done.. That seriously looks very, very accurate. Believe me, you don't hear me saying that about people's stuff every day lol. Can we see what refs you are using? And are you eye-balling it or modeling ontop of refs?
Couple small crits:
  • Need to fix the smoothing groups on the dome base, so the sides look like seperate pieces. Exploding the faces should also work.
  • The foundation posts are too thin, definately need to thicken those up a bit. Remember the EA entrance was created out of the old Ops Center set, there are good refs of these posts with it.
  • The um, things that stick out from the roof up front (very well done BTW) don't angle back on their forward face, IIRC they are 90 degrees up&down.
Small request, can we get a top view of this beauty? Oh and I can't wait to see how you handle the roofing... may give me inspiration for the EA's roof 8) (greatly needed inspiration heh both versions are quite odd pieces of architecture)

Nope, Remdul beat both of you on that one :D Wish I still had the render of his version ...

Nicely done though, hppav. I'm impressed :)

I'm eyeballing it, that's how I've made all of my "Highly Accurate" models of the past.

Here's the top view you requested. Keep in mind that the lower tier is still under construction.

My Refrence Pictures:

This shows the big flood lights on the roof (I have only placed one in the render):

A good shot of the bridge over the moat to reach the Ops Center:

Exterior Light Detail:

http://jurassickingdom.net/thelostworld ... LD-581.jpg
----

Close detail of the roof under the helipad, odd thing though that during the run to the Ops scene and the helicopter takeoff the floodlight under the helipad is missing.

Door Detail:

Helipad Rail Detail:

----

Wide shot of nearly the entire front of the building, note that you can barely make out the floodlight that was turned off turning this scene that's mounted on the roof:

----

This next picture is after they removed all of the electrical components from the set, notice the posts are angled like in my model and the supports are thin (at lest a quarter the size of the ones in JP3).

-----

EDIT: Added some more details, mainly just the railing on the second teir and the other light. Fixed the, uh, arched things so the ends would be vertical like in the reference material.

More work, finished the second tier, the bridge, and the moat itself. Next I will make the supports for the bridge and start start working more on the main building.

Twas a little bit off, so I changed it:

Hppav that looks sweet. 8) And um, kick-ass refs. *saves* BTW here are a few of the Ops Center refs collected for JPDS (by myself and Ryan):

http://img111.exs.cx/img111/9498/operat ... e077an.jpg

If you get this model into Tres that will be quite a sight to see! Honestly I have to make an effort to keep from asking you to join the JPDS team, cause I definately want the ops center to be my own baby in JPDS :D

Oh and that overhead view.... where the hell did you get it??? That is so fraking awesome I almost never have maps to model from, now I should be able to make this 100% accurate!!

Overhead view, public domain. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sll=33. ... 010064&t=k
It's a satellite image of the set, from before Google made Maps zoom in less close. (For security reasons?) I'm just glad that I snagged it.

Whoa wait when was the photo taken? Like what's the date on it, do you know? Cause if it's during or after JP/// production then it's actually the EA and not the ops center anymore... remember the EA entrance set did not really look like it does in the movie:

I'd say that mine was taken somewhere during 1998-2000, though I'm not sure. They wouldn't have a reason to change the moat as it isn't seen in JP3. Here's a picture of the area from 1994:

they don't really change stuff radically, the jurassic park CGI dinosaur models have the same shape from the early movies only were repainted...(thats all the difference), for jp3...they were only modelled again in great detail or the early ones were improved.

edit: spectacular work hppav! 8)
