Very well done! Definitely using this some time. By the way, do you ever plan on releasing everything from JPO if you're not going to complete it?

Re: Jurassic Park Raptor Pit
Eventually. This is a part of that. I'm planning on getting stuff cleaned up, given physics, etc.
There wasn't a whole lot done for JPO outside of terrain work and conceptualizing. And, of course, research... Tons of research.
I do plan on doing a level of the entire Visitor Center. I do have a 50-60% complete model that just needs finished and given physics.
There's a level out there called hppavtest, it includes the Explorer Model and a fully scripted and working set of breaker boxes originally intended for JPO, if you didn't already know about that one. I also released a handful of JPO related stuff here along with it:

I've still got quite a few little things here and there that still need some work... Perhaps I should release my Wholey Hell test level that I was using to work on the terrain?

Sounds good, I'll definitely check it out. No rush though! I'm a patient man. xD

Re: Jurassic Park Raptor Pit
I actually made an analysis based on the pen's size. It's tiny. Not sure if it's to scale from the movie or not. But if it is, this means the poor Raptors were pretty much cramped inside of the Quarantine Pen. No wonder they were trying to get out! XD Add the plants from the movie into the pen and there's even less room for these poor dinos to move...
As for why a dead raptor is hanging there and why I'm dead, when I killed this raptor it was jumping up. Then, its dead body crushed Anne against the side of the fence killing her. And that's pretty much how I died.

Re: Jurassic Park Raptor Pit
It's as close to movie scale as I could get. Even I was surprised at how small it is on the inside.

Re: Jurassic Park Raptor Pit
iirc, the Troodon were placed in a similar styled Pen in JP the Game iirc. There's more of them though so it must have been even more crowded in there. The poor animals.... as much as they should have been euthanized, that's just cruel that they were put in such small cages. Then again as Peter Ludlow once said (and in the Novel Dodgeson.) "An Extinct animal has no rights. It was manufactured by us. We made it, we patented it, we own it." or something close to that. Probably a similar concept or just INGEN being cheap. XD

Re: Jurassic Park Raptor Pit
Also, what if the raptor pit was more like a real pit and went under ground level. Might allow you to actually put something in there without it getting too cramped. Actually, in SNES JP the Raptor Pen has several sub levels and you can see out into the foliage in some of them.

True, but all the buildings in Jurassic Park Snes were TARDISs as far as the interiors go.glitchhunter09 wrote:Also, what if the raptor pit was more like a real pit and went under ground level. Re: Jurassic Park Raptor Pit
Hppav quick question; wouldn't be faster to find topographic data of the sites were they built and filmed the raptor pen and visitor centre? I realise that the raptor pen set was mostly likely no where near the visitor centre set, where as in universe they were close, so you'd have to patch topographical maps together, but it would save you the guess work.

Re: Jurassic Park Raptor Pit
The main problem with that is scale. A lot of the features seen on the island in the movie are way too big to fit on the island if featured by that scale. The T-Rex mountain range is actually just one ridge off of the massive central peak of Kauai, which is 5,148 feet (1,569 m) tall.
Then there's the Helicopter Valley, it is really really long. On fan maps it's just this little short gap in the mountains, but on the topographic maps it goes all the way from the shore to a third of the way across Kauai. Several miles.
On an island that is supposed to be less than 10 miles across in either direction, that's a lot of real estate, so it would have to either be scaled down or featured as its own level with no points of reference to show it's inaccurate scale (like the ridiculously long Warthog Run in Halo 1)
Sorna, with its not defined scale, can have features closer to the real world scale, but still have to be smaller due to the overall smaller size of the island (I doubt Sorna would be anywhere near the size of Kauai).
Then there's another problem. The only public topographic maps of Kauai I have found aren't detailed enough to work. But even still, it takes a lot of time and effort to turn a topographic map into a usable heightmap. Usually it's just faster to recreate the terrain by guesstimation than to spend so much time worrying about a freakish amount of accuracy.
Here's the location of the Visitor Center set.
Here is the location of the Raptor Pit
And here is the Helipad. Zoom out and see how long the canyon is. The infamous "Helicopter Rock" is actually on a different island.

There are high-res DEM (height)maps of the Hawaiian islands, have you looked at them?hppav wrote:Then there's another problem. They have a 10m resolution... and you can easily convert them to greyscale heightmaps.
Of course, if you want detail smaller than 10m (like 3m or 1m), well...
