A New Level: Craters (RELEASED) (New Huds too!)

Post by awesome24712 »

Merry Christmas Everybody!

Well, well! Craters is finally finished. I probably spent more time on it than I should have, but it's finished and I like the results. You can download it here (first time using FilePlanet):

http://www.mediafire.com/?okzpud3rwi8jtab (~11mb download, ~50mb extracted)

*Note: Included in the download are two new Huds, BoneHUD and SwampHUD (both are optimized for 800x600). Here's two sceenshots, both of them with BoneHUD. SwampHUD can be seen in other posts in this topic.

Installation Instructions:

Simply extract the .Zip into a folder of your choice. You can't just extract into your Trespasser folder, you have to (following the instuctions in the ReadMe's) move/copy and paste the files into the appopriate directorys. The ReadMe's include the futhu steps to complete installation.

There are no TPAs included in the download. I did have some custom ones originally, but there weren't that many sounds and they all sounded bad. I didn't think it was worth it.

I kindly request that this level be added to the downloads section at TresCom

Old Post:
:D Hello Everybody, I am now in the prrocess of creating my first (non-test) level. It's called: Craters. Many puzzles of quite a variety will be put throughout the level. I would give away more, but I don't want to spoil it until it is done. Although I will give a screenshot that shows the overall look of it:

The only dinosaur you can see in this pictue is a para in the Backround, but there are others. Like I said, I don't want to give it all away.
I hope you like what you see!! It will be released some time in December (on a special day perhaps? )

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. 8)

You may also have noticed in the screenshot a custom HUD, which I plan to share along with the level.
However, I am having a few problems importing new Terrain Objects. I can't bother to upload a screenshot because I'm certain you guys know what the problem is as you read this. I am fully aware that all terrain objects need to share the same 256-color palette, but how exactly do I make them do that? I've tried opening up the base texture in MSPaint and pasting the new texture on top of it, saving it and then overwriting the new texture's texture, but the problem persisted.

Although, It doesn't really matter whether or not it gets fixed, seeing the texture kind of looks fine anyway, but I know I would have to learn how to do this at some stage or another so my as well do it now... :?

Get Wally. That program's meant for saving to the same pallete without altering colors.

I'll try that  Will edit this once I've tried. ( and hopefully succeeded!)

EDIT: There! The Genie was out of the Bottle :D

Thanks for the help, Glitch. Almost thought it wouldn't work :? But Wally now has a permanant residence in my TresEd folder 8)

Sorry for the double post, just wanted people to know there's an update.

Well, I imported many more terrain objects (after editing their pallete of course  ), and I'm now working on mostly visual stuff. I think it's turning out quite well, I even created my own (semi-)custom skin for a very dangerous dinosaur...
Here's a screenshot, it's the same area as the last one, but if you look at it you'll see the differences—

While I'm at it, I'll also post some more...

I thought I should show some more screenshots, as it is my first level and I would like to know what others think of it...

I really like what I see! Actually love that you don't have Draw Distance on, and it's old Trespasser looking screenshots. :)

Looks really nice actually, really very nice indeed, although the only thing I'd say is the terrain seems to change very sharply, so making the sides a bit less steep would mean the textures don't stretch as much and it'll look better. :P

Yes, most of the stuff is original trespasser stuff, although there are a few exceptions (naturally). One of the things is actual from even before the retail

Yep! Thanks!

Well, the level is called "Craters," and a few of the puzzles and such involve getting up on the edge. I'll try to smoothen it out though.

Thanks everyone! Still some work that still needs to be done, especially some very complicated triggers.

Sorry for the double post (Again. This is getting out of hand...)

Level's coming along fine. Flattened out a lot of the walls like LTSten said, it looks much better now. 8)
Although recently I've been having problems with TresEd crashing. Not sure why, but it seems to happen when I'm moving around, fast. Although ussually I'm able to save the level before I click OK to 'terminate the progrram.' It's weird though how I can still do everything except move around when it gives me the message. The level WILL still get finished, though. This is just a minor inconvenience.

Note: Where are those gas cans? :)

EDIT: Well, here's another update to keep people interested:
Spoiler: show

That is all. It's been fun making the level, but there's still quite a ways to go before it's finished.

Re: A New Level in the Making: Craters

Triple post but I don't care. Just another update. This level's been going fine. Although quite a bit has been changed since how the level originally was to be (there are screenshots in the previous post that I don't think anybody but bots saw). It seems that the more I explore the forums I find more stuff I want to put in my level :D A custom TGA, an intro SMK movie, as well as new sounds in TPAs have been implemented. When I originally started making the level I was just using pallette after pallette, not caring how much I put in, but that's different now. I think the story of the level is now more in-depth than I had planned also. What? Eleven days or so until Christmas? I think I will have it done by then, if not shortly after. I think you guys will like it :)

Note: It needs a key. It's got to be around here somewhere ( )

Technically, your triple post is legal. In fact, you can make multiple posts in the same thread in a row as long as they're relevant to the topic and are at least 24 hours apart. If you need to bump the topic before then, copy your most recent post, delete it, start a new post and add the info from the old one plus the new stuff and submit it. I do that a lot actually.
