Messin' with snow. ..

Post by Rebel »

I was screwing around with different ideas as to how to generate snowfall and the attachment is one of the options I conjured up. The setup would work for a small area of woods or clearing, but it isn't something you could use through an entire level. The level download is rather small, 528kbs if someone wanted to give it a look. A generic .scn file (doesn't care about directory) is inside the snow .zip file in case you need to replace the one inside the .rar file .

I like the effect but the backside of snowflakes is always a black color.

Backside? Not certain of what you're referring to, but it was mostly an experiment anyways. I imagine creating widely scattered snow flurries would be kinder to the engine & allow for a more expansive use.

Ah, but that isn't actually a back side. The snow's askew when viewed from certain angles, that's what you're seeing. It's like looking at the edge of a polygon instead of looking directly at it; that's when you get the latter image. Like I said though, it was mostly an experiment. I'm now leaning more towards those widely scattered flurries I mentioned -

Should be fixable by assigning "bool Unlit = true" to the obj ;) Screens look cool... The snow effect from ATX used in Winter Contest settings definitely has its drawbacks, can't really make an all-out blizzard with it. This looks like it could achieve that effect for those interested.
