Trespasser Remake

Post by DeadEye »

This idea first came to mind when I saw the Pre-Release screenshots on TresCom, like Raptor VS. Chair and the Raptor and the Stego. These screenshots could have been 3DSMax renders, but were probably an early beta/in-game. If we were to get our hands (Or claws, in the instance of some of you more prehistoric TresCom-ers  ) we might be able to import these dinosaurs into Trespasser itself, work out any bugs, and then have a remade Trespasser. This is only an idea, however, but I'd like to know your thoughts.

That's in PV96, and I believe hppav was "fixing" it to be more accurate relative to the screenshots...

Those two screenshots are definitely renders, not in-game. Notice how in the second image, the one you call "Raptor VS. Chair", the pose of the raptor is identical to the the pose the raptors in these screenshots:

If it were in-game they wouldn't all have the same pose. It's a static model.

Same thing with the other image, the Stego has the same pose as this one:

Old news lol, but yes. There are actually confirmable ingame images that use static models, though. The AI wasn't working until very late.

Well, the models themselves look considerably better. If we could take the models and mix those with the AI of the actual Trespasser dinosaurs, we'd have considerably better-looking dinosaurs.

There are actually considerably better models...such as the TC Isle raptor. However, due to their higher quality, they have a bigger hit to frame rates then the regular trespasser dinosaurs

To make anything decent you need a high poly count. As ahead of its time as Tres was, it was still limited to '96-'98 hardware. High poly = bad. Low poly = looks rubbishy, but it actually works.

Aww but they did implement normal mapping to 'fix' the low-poly problem *laughs himself stupid*

Yeah, Remdul's raptor from TC~Isle is higher poly even than that older Tres raptor you refer to. Also I hope you realize we don't have the old Tres raptor model lying around to rig  It's only in images. But yes, higher poly dinos decrease framerates when encountered in numbers & in dense environments.. I'm hoping JPDS can still work with some of 'em, though, cause several are being employed. Most new dinos available are pretty high-poly, and SI did a gazillion great skins for the Isle raptor. The lower-poly dinos from Tres also have a ton of textures on them, making them more time-consuming to reskin (just the same, I've done a few for JPDS myself).

Point to take away from this - These aren't the raptors you're looking for. ;) Go play TC~Isle, you won't regret it!
