Fence Import Bug

Post by LtSten »

Well, image of the bug:
Image

Now, what I did here was:
Exported the fence from Enigma's Christmas Crisis level
Downloaded the texture that was released, the no-snow version
Opened the original fence bmp, pasted the no-snow version over the top, saved.
Imported the fence into a new startlev file.

Consulted Drac about this, he said he hadn't seen exactly this before. :P I've probably done something wrong along the way, or similar, as I believe jet had this fence working with no-snow?

I have no idea what the problem, or solution, is.
Ideas, anyone?

Were you using MS Paint? MS Paint rarely saves 256 color textures correctly. Usually they come out in black and white only, (no shades of grey.) This appears to be the case here.

Also why did you open the original texture and paste the replacer on it? Couldn't you delete the original and simply rename the replacer? Sounds to me like that's where you made the error.

I used photoshop, and I tried both methods. Same result.

What are you using for the opacity map, in the first place? Post both images here... (texture and opacity map)

Does it look like that in-game? Or is that just how TresEd is rendering it?

Ah. Ah. Well, that was stupid of me. Concluding because it doesn't look right in TresEd that it must also be wrong ingame is a rather stupid thing to do. Oops.

Anyway, it shouldn't really appear like this in TresEd, or should it? :P Ideas?

I'm not sure if it's because you've uploaded a JPEG, but the opacity map has 25 colors, when it should only have two - pure black and pure white. That could explain why some areas which shouldn't be transparent are. Try this one:

Here's yous in fake color, replacing white with red and black with green; everything else is spurious.

And this is how it's being interpreted:

The opacity map in the folder is not a jpg. Probably something that photobucket did to it.
Also, that "new" opacity map caused the texture to be displayed as is - no transparency at all. It's as if the map didn't exist.

I'm not saying you used a JPEG, I'm saying I can't tell if it looked like that already or if it only happened after you converted it for uploading. I suspect the former, as it explains what you see in the screenshot.

Did you save the new opacity map as a greyscale BMP? I'm attaching one in case you didn't.
And Photoshop is bad for game textures and such, it tends to save superfluous info in the files... copying and pasting is bad too... better use tools specifically designed for game textures.

Ach, if I had seen this earlier, I would've given you my working version, but I've been distracted by Silent Hill Wii lately...sorry.

I beg to differ, Photoshop CS1 and older were awesome for working on game textures. All of my textures for anything Trespasser and game-related was done in Photoshop :D
