Nice work!

I think I recognize the grand stair-case from the movie, not too sure though because it's been a long time. :P

Perhaps the railings will help you remember it :P

The Grand Staircase has always been a favorite location for Titanic Enthusiasts such as myself. Almost every movie/TV Miniseries features the Grand Staircase in some way (Though the latest mini-series does not, from what I've heard). I think a lot of the interest in it now is due to the mystery when it comes to what exactly happened to it and why is it completely missing from the wreck. Cameron's Grand Staircase is much larger than the real thing, mainly to make it easier to film. The Pigeon Forge museum has one that's closer in size to the real thing in scale, though it has had some changes to make it fit modern safety standards, like the brass railing and the room around it is designed for the museum's purpose with an elevator across from it and exhibit entrances above:

Image

Seeing it in person when I was there was awesome and the fact that you go up it to reach the First Class part of the exhibit was pure genius.

EDIT: Got more done on the Grand Staircase. This part of the ship worried me the most when I was working on the original level. However my modeling skills have greatly increased since then, even if they aren't the best. Here's some shots.

Image
The whole thing seems more structural with these columns. Titanic Fact: The carvings on the pedestals of the columns were all individually carved and unique. The one used on these columns comes from the A Deck Aft Grand Staircase of Olympic.

Image
Here you can look all the way down to E deck, the level that most of the watertight bulkheads ended on.

Image
The staircase looks much better with the complete railings and columns.

Can you imagine the occlusion nightmare ahead for me? But it still looks awesome.

Oh, and do you guys think I should move this to the Levels and Design board? I was actually surprised to see this was in the Smalltalk board. (EDIT: I decided to. This might get more attention there anyway, )

I never understood the deal with the film being so popular. It's a crappy love story that never actually happened.... I love the Titanic itself though. I consider the movie though, the Twilight of the 90's except for the fact it wasn't based off of a book.

And Yes, there was no Jack Dawson. There was however a Joseph Dawson, but he was a crew member, not a passenger.

Regarding your work though Hppav, looking good. One of the good things about the movie was that they tried to make the ship interior as accurate as possible.

I just came up with a new theory as to what happened to the Grand Staircase... What if when the breakup was occurring, the stern pushed the rear of the bow section underwater while air was still trapped in the bow... Then the air shifts forward looking for a way out and finds the biggest hole in the ship... the shaft holding the Grand Staircase. Since the staircase is largely held in by gravity, the uprush of air and water forces it out through the top of the ship. It is this blast of air that saves Lightoller by also blowing up through the vent that had just previously tried to drag him down, and the upward pitch that throws the forward funnel into the bridge.

Anyone think this works? I mean it matches the eyewitness testimonies of the people in the area... If the upward pitch is big enough it might even match the description of Jack Thayer who said the bow raised back up out of the water. Drawing done on the Carpathia based on Thayer's description. Lyyli Silven backs up this account.

Sounds plausible to me. Air/Water pressure can do a great many things.

I started to redo the bridge:

NOTE: In Titanic's day, enclosed Navigation Bridges were a new thing. Most ships had completely open bridges and the crew were trained in interpreting weather patterns. Some captains still go outside of their bridge to check the weather patterns themselves instead of relying on radar.

Started work on the A Deck promenade, the deck sheer isn't very prominent despite me following Bruce Beveridge's plans, but you can still partially make it out. It might be more obvious once B and C are done to show the Poop Deck and Forecastle Deck:

Image

NOTE: The front half of the A Deck Promenade has a weather screen attached. The windows will be done via a texture to save polygons. This screen was attached to Titanic after reports from passengers on the Olympic of the spray of the ocean hitting them. A similar screen was attached to the Britannic as well, but Olympic never received the screen - which actually makes it easier to determine which ship is which since they were very similar. Titanic's B Deck was completely different from Olympic's as well, though Olympic's B Deck was later changed several times.

It's quite amazing to see how some people know so much about it, I had to research to know some of the things you mentioned naturally, I feel out-classed. :P

Well I've been reading material about the Titanic since 1996, . Some sites I recommend are:

http://titanic-model.com - The Titanic Research and Modeling Association, they have LOTS of photos of the Olympic Class liners. Five people from here wrote Titanic: The Ship Magnificent, an excellent reference that's two volumes long ($50 a volume and well worth it for my work).

http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/ - Encyclopedia Titanica is a great site for finding what is known for sure about what happened as well as read debates about all the fuzzy information.

http://titanichistoricalsociety.net/ - Titanic Historical Society has been around forever. I was a member 10 years ago. Somewhere in my attic I still have their publications from then that had many images from Cameron's movie.

http://marconigraph.com - Website by Titanic Historian Parks Stephenson (you'll recognize him from many Titanic documentaries). He does 3D Titanic models as well.

http://www.kenmarschall.com/ - Ken Marschall's website, he is THE Titanic expert. You'll see him everywhere. He did all those paintings of what the wreck looked like when they found it.

Anyway, I did some more work on the A Deck Promenade:

Image
To the right you'll see one of the crew only stairs. Some people make the mistake of thinking the stairs leading down to B deck are behind the stairs leading up to the Boat Deck, when the stairs are really the other way. Another weather screen caps around the stairs and closes off the front of the promenade (this screen isn't yet modeled). The stairs you see in the hole in the floor are the Grand Staircase steps from D to E deck down below.

Image
Here's another shot showing off the supports for the A Deck Promenade and the temporary A Deck walls. At the bottom you can see the Grand Staircase as it ends at F deck near the Turkish Bath and Swimming Pool.
