Trespasser remake

Post by velestro1 »

hi i want an honest opinion. With trespasser say a studio were to take on a remake of this game would it be successful enough to keep the studio afloat or would the game flop like last time. i only ask because I am considering opening a game studio to recreate this game. i still have alot to do before this can be done but part of the start up process is to see a community reaction to the possibility so i would love to hear from you

The problem would be focused on licensing and the cost thereof. EA owns the rights to Trespasser and they are insane about profits and they wouldn't OK a remake or sequel unless they could stand to make substantial profits. And since EA doesn't even acknowledge that it owns Trespasser, the chances of getting a license to remake it are even slimmer.

Then there's the Jurassic Park license which is owned by Universal. That costs a pretty penny as well. And since Jurassic Park: The Game flopped, Universal will be extra cautious when it comes to giving a green light to a Jurassic Park game. They'd probably not take a new game company seriously.

Trespasser's campaign is, compared to other games today, rather slow paced with emphasis on exploration and discovery as opposed to fighting dinosaurs. Games like this rarely do well because the gaming public prefers fast paced shoot em ups and fighting games and the game studios keep cranking them out year after year even if the only thing they change on the box is the number or subtitle because it's what sells.

The best route to take would be to create a game that is inspired by Trespasser but isn't Trespasser nor is a Jurassic Park game. There are still quite a few things Trespasser does that game engines today don't even try to do, and the level of interaction in Trespasser is still unparalleled (Crysis comes close, though you can't reach out and pick up everything in that game). If you do it in a manner that will keep today's ADHD gamers interested while capturing the spirit of Trespasser then you might succeed. But it would be a good idea to get a few other games under your belt before you try something that is that advanced.

You might want to look into Frictional Games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frictional_Games They are a small team that created this game series called Penumbra and used that as a solid foundation for a company that is now best known for Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which has sold almost 400,000 units since it was released 2010 - compare that to Trespasser's 50,000 copies sold.

Yeah, that game looked interesting. Too bad it got canned. Kind of a Resident Evil style JP game, if I remember correctly.
