PREVIEW

The title of this game could have been "George Lucas meets Bill Gates". Trespasser is the digital sequel to the movie the Lost World, and will be available for PC early next year.

NIGHTMARE

The story of Trespasser begins a few years after things went totally wrong in Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park is located on an island called Site B. Where, with the help of a new genetic cloning process, a themepark with living dinosaurs was created, at which visitors can stare in awe. It wasn't long before the park turned into a genetic nightmare and no one would dare set foot on the island anymore, leaving the dinosaurs behind.

For years no one in their right mind would set foot upon Site B. In the most unfortunate matter, after her plane crashed, Anne will have no choice but to do so. With one arm and little hope of survival she sets out.

PEACEFUL?

And here is where this 1st person action adventure with you in the role of Anne begins. After you've recovered from the disaster and relearning the basic movements such as walking, jumping and using one arm, you start exploring the 3D surroundings and will see that they look just like the ones you expected from this Jurassic Park island.

Hundreds of individually animated plants, trees, hills, praries, forests and lakes with life-like water create a serene natural environment, without dark passages.

Not that there aren't any in-door environments, because during your survival tour you will find plenty of abandoned offices, workshops and other structures. It all looks very peaceful, just don't forget where you are.

INSTINCTIVE

Man may not have set foot on the island for years, the dinosaurs haven't sat still considerably reproduced, as a result of which you can encounter them everywhere.

Every dinosaur has been drawn to scale and brought to life with the use of physicly modelled skeletons and muscle research to make movements as realistic as possible. Every animal has its own AI which is programmed the way dinosaurs would normally react (as far as we know of course). They get the need to feed, need for safety and fear pain, which can all work in your advantage. The animals do not display pre-programmed behavior, they react instinctively to every situation. If you stumble on a Triceratops munching on a plant don't be afraid, he's a vegetarian. Step on the toes of a T-Rex and be prepared for the worst!

DEAD IN ONE STRIKE

Defending yourself and surviving in general is a little different than in most action adventures. There are no frag guns, lasers, flame throwers, grenades or missile launchers. Just a few hand weapons left behind. Your defense depends more on your knowledge than it does on weapons. With the use of the almost fully interactive environment, you have to make weapons yourself and work out the solutions to all kinds of problems.

For example; if a Raptor chases you up a hill and all you have is a stick, use it to pry loose a boulder so it will roll down the hill and squish the raptor. One of the ways to get of the island in one piece could be to collect sticks and plants. With this material you might be able to build a boat and escape the dinosaurs.

The key to survival is reality. Forget everything you've learned in other games and go back to the basics; your own intelligence. There are no powerups, special skills, combo moves or a weapon inventory. Unless you can hold it in your hand or stick it under your belt, you can't take any objects with you at all. Also, your health is not displayed on a hud, instead, you can die in one strike when encountering a dinosaur 3 times your size.

NO AMATEURS

To create the most realistic 3d action adventure so far, the developers of DreamWorks has done great in the sound department. They hired the academy award winning production Sound-Delux, and with the use of new game technology they created a never before heard 3d sound atmosphere. According to them, for the first time, the sounds are generated in a game on-the-fly, depending on what happens at that moment (haven't we heard this before in other top titles?). In the final version of Trespasser you will hear Richard Attenborough and Minnie Driver will voice Anne.

PATIENCE

Trespasser will support just about any 3d card and also has a software version which sadly, runs very poor on a P200. Because of the attention given to a realistic environment, I wouldn't even try this game without having a high-end computer, equipped with one of the newest 3d cards.

And to warn the hard-core shoot 'em up fans, even though this game may look very cool, it's a kind of "look for the action game" and I don't think most trigger-happy gamers will have the patience to scour the fifteen square kilomters for possible enemies.

VERDICT

Graphics 8.9
Sound 8.7
Originality 9.3
Playability 8.3
= = = = = = = = = =
Overall 8.8

Pros
- Realistic environment
- Realistic dinosaurs
- Having to use your brain

Cons
- High-end computer recommended

In the few months until completion Dreamworks can work out the bugs, because the demo I got played a bit slow. Or maybe it's a sign my P200 has had its best time and it's time for a new system. Trespasser is a wonderful game for adventure gamers who prefer realism over non-stop action.
