Windows 98?

Post by jetblack »

Not sure if this goes here, but I recently got a new computer, a Win 98. I currently can't update it, but I was wondering if Tres (with ATX), TC-Isle, TresEd+GeomAdd, and all our other fine levels would run on it.

New? Windows 98? That's an oxymoron.
Why Windows 98? Why not an NT version of Windows? (2000, XP, Vista, 7)

I don't see why Trespasser wouldn't be able to run on Windows 98, that's what it was meant to run on. TC-Isle is just a modified version of the Trespasser demo and ATX doesn't use high tech to do what it does. The only ones I'm not sure about are TresEd and GeomAdd.

TresEd and GeomAdd should work on 98, since they were created before XP came out (I think) anyway, and I think its Rebel that still used WinME (or 2000?) so tresed and geomadd should just work fine.

All of those should work, especially since the final release of TresEd was 2003 (when XP was on shelves IIRC)
But yes... why Win98? Microsoft themselves no longer support anything before Windows 2000 (Win200 is just that awesome :P) You'd be better off installing Windows 2000 on the machine anyway, most servers use Windows 2000 from what I heard from a friend of mine who runs Professional Game Servers.

In 2003 I was using a Win98 machine with 64 MB of RAM and still managing to run TresEd and GeomAdd and Trespasser. TC~Isle and ATX came out after I got Magnus (My old WinXP machine) so I can't tell you how well those will work, but I don't see a reason for them not to work.

The only problem with running 10+ year operating systems is it limits your ability to run present day software. Forget today's games, you'll even be hard pressed to find a compatible instant messenger to install. I personally think it sucks as I've used everything from win95 to win7 and I still like winme (although most people hated it - it never crashes or freezes on me).

Anyhoo, even a stubborn old mule like myself has reached the point where I realize that I either need to upgrade to xp or simple purchase a new computer (I really don't want to do the latter).
