Playing old savegames

I remember making Wu's Stash, where I had loaded Wu's house with every single weapon in the level, and lots of other items too. I also remember that I made this savegame without having applied a single patch.
After applying the exe only patch I tried to load the game and it would crash. We talked about this before, but where I'm going right now:
All the savegames work fine now, ones made with patched and non-patched game
I'm not complaining, I'd just like to know if there's anyone who knows how this can be...?
