On some of the slower machines I'm in charge of, I'm really liking iceWM as a desktop environment! It doesn't seem to require nearly as much memory to operate as Gnome, and seemingly far less than KDE.
It is simple, straight-ahead, non-pretentious and overall, just downright simple and very functional!
