Dan, What version is your first Mandrake?
According to the date you posted... maybe 8.2?
My first Linux is Mandrake 9.0, and I stuck during installation when testing my X settings everytime untill I know how to solve(um... "skip") it.

Yes, I started with 8.2. Compared to 9.0, 8.2 was a nightmare! You got no Nvidia support! You had to install Nvidia from scratch, and it was a bitch to get it right! I even compiled Xmms from source, and wrestled with dependencies for days and days, but I got it working. By comparison, 9.0 was a walk in the park!
