You should be able to:
put in floppy, then:
mount /mnt/floppy [enter]
You should then hear a *snick-bzzt--bzzt-etc..*. (the floppy being mounted.)
Then:
cd /mnt/floppy [enter]
ls [enter]
put in floppy, then:
mount /mnt/floppy [enter]
You should then hear a *snick-bzzt--bzzt-etc..*. (the floppy being mounted.)
Then:
cd /mnt/floppy [enter]
ls [enter]

It appears that this is a bug. I wouldn't know since my wife's laptop doesn't have a floppy drive. See this for a solution.
