Crate information from 3ds Max IT file(s)

Post by tatu »

I was going through one of the IT versions in 3ds Max format today again. As said earlier, the basement uses boxes to categories the foliage and the crates. I did notice today that the boxes for the crates have descriptions added to them, to where the crates were suppose to be placed, or preferred.

Boxname
Meshes included
Description

!InGen Anywhere
- PcrateINGEN01-00
- PcrateINGEN02-00
- PcrateINGEN03-00
- PcrateINGENFrdgLt-00
- PcrateINGENLrgLt-00
- Pwoodcrate01-00
- PcrateINGENMed-00
- Phollwcrate00-00 (with Phollwcratelid00-00)

"Boxes marked InGen and boxes with no markings. Use these anywhere at all."

!Geoplant Movable
- PcrateStandard01-00

"A movable crate from Standard Dynamics (supplier of geothermal plant parts).
Could also make sense at construction sites."

!InGen Immovable
- PcrateINGENFrgHvy-00
- PcrateINGENLrgHvy-00
- PcrateINGENHuge-00

Boxes marked InGen which are immovable.
These will never move, ever, so use accordingly.

!Smuggler Crate
- PAplaneCrate00

Box marked 'Bogota.' Used at the wrecked plane in the Plains.
If we have any other smuggler corpses or areas it makes sense, it can be
used there.

!Burnt Crates

- Pburntcrate01-00
- Pburntcrate02-00
- pburntcratelong-00 (with Pbrntcrtelong00lid-00)

For use in fire-damaged areas. Some have lids, some don't.

!Harbor Broken Lids
- PcrateVictoryLid-00
- PcrateLindstrtLid-00

These companies make guns. Put these pieces with guns in the harbor
warehouses or elsewhere it makes sense to have broken-open shipping
containers.

- PEquipBoxnewbgr2-00
- PEquipBoxnewtbk1-00

Yes, I had noticed them too. They hade everything very well organized.
Maybe we should include some renders and the text underneath, and make this into some kind of instruction manual for level builders...

Broken crate lids from Lindstradt, Carson Industries, and Victory Enterprises.

Well that explains what those strange pieces in the basement. Are the PEquipBoxnewtbk those blueish metal boxes that show up in old screenshots?

Edit
I just re-read through the list and realized that PEquipBoxnewtbk are those blue and green cases, I had originally thought they were part of the "two German technicians" conspiracy. So I guess those metal crates aren't on the list.

Those are mirrored... maybe the colors of the textures are off, too.

Interesting, crate specifics. I wonder why the developers chose Portland Construction.

At first I wasn't sure what you meant but after looking closer I think I see what you were referring to. I've seen these crates before in custom maps but I can't recall if I've ever seen them in older builds.

The InGen logos are flipped, I guess the whole texture is. Or maybe all those screenshots were flipped? Nah, then the text in the sign would have been fliped, too...
Looks like Drac somehow made versions of these crates... I searched on Google and ended up finding a topic right here at the TresCom forum.

judging by the description of the burnt crates, it could be possible that they were planned to be used in places other than PH. Of course, by the time IT was added to the game, PH has long since been removed, so who knows? maybe they planned on placing the Hunters' camp somewhere else at one point but never made it.

Tatu, can you help here with dates? I fully suspect the early MAX IT we have goes with a time in development when IT itself was not included in builds of the game itself. The point to take being that the various levels maybe (or surely?) had some sort of in-progress version regardless of inclusion. Some devs were assigned mainly to those levels after all.

Thanks, and uh I'm also needing the dates of the Tres builds before IT was included, and the first one we have which has it included.

I will refer to this list: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7924 for build dates.

Build 96 is the first build we have with IT in it.

Build22/E3demo is 5/27, earliest IT is 6/11... Seems clear to me; extra-build levels were around and their states unknown to us other than IT. Perhaps additionally, build-included versions of levels might be "the latest working version at the time" and dev progress was further than shown.

Those MAX files are from builds 44 and 45, so in between 32 and 55...

Where does that info come from? Since IT doesn't appear in b55, it would show the presence of a build label for levels not actually in the build...
